“Service Not Self”
Founded in late 1949 and affiliated to the Royal Commonwealth Ex- Service League, The Jamaica Legion has been the mouthpiece of the roughly 16,000 ex-servicemen and women who served in World Wars I & II. Driven by its motto “Service not Self,” Its aim is to see that no ex-serviceman or servicewoman, or their dependents, suffer hardship or live in want. Though the lever – money – is not always available; memories are short and new generations arrive who know little or nothing of the horrors of war and their aftermath, excepting those who have directly, or indirectly, suffered from them. His Excellency, the Governor General of Jamaica is its Patron and its operations are administered by an Island Council. The Legion runs the Curphey Home near Newport , Manchester , where they house, clothe, feed and provide nursing and medical services for about twenty aged and indigent ex-servicemen through the generosity of benefactors. It is estimated that there are approximately 1000 surviving ex -servicemen in Jamaica .
